Rust Bicycle

How can get rid of rust on my bicycle?
I’m doing my bike this summer and wondered how i can rid of bit of rust (it’s not covered!) – Also am i able to purchase chain guard from a general bicycle store – maybe the bike would look better without?
Cheers
Well,
the proper way is to remove the rust (this would also mean that some paint will be removed) down to the frame material. The frame now needs to be primed, emeried, primed emeried, primed, emeried, painted, emeried, painted emeried and varnished.
Another way is to use a chemical rust remover and then paint.
Another way is to remove the loose rust and use something like smooth hammerite.
If you are trying to remove the rust from something like a steel wheel rim, you need to polish it away or use some wire wool to remove it.
As to the chain guard, it depends on the bike. A good chain guard will protect your chain and mean that, if wearing trousers, you wont need cycle clips. However, I do not think that they look good on anything but a single speed or hub geared machine.
I bought one several months ago and fitted it to a modern hub geared ‘commuter’ style bike.
They are not easily found.
There is another kind that fits to the cranks and rotates with them.. These seem to be more easily found. They are fitted to B.M.X. BIKES to stop the chain hitting the obstacle being ridden over.
