rust lamps
how do i clean tarnished brass?

ok, so i just found an antique lamp in my garage and i researched it a bit and its a ‘juno’ lamp which dates pre 1900. its not in good condition. the metal has a sort of rust-is looking stuff on it that kinda looks green. im only 15 so i cant buy some producats but id like to know any cleaning supplies i would need. i dont wanna ruin this because it looks really cool so any tips on cleaning brass would be great. the lamp looks just like this… just dirty http://antiques-internet.com/colorado/swspirit/dynapage/IP461.htm

Nice lamp & has good antique value.
Go easy.
Avoid the homebrews that use salt , acids or ammonia..
Reason… some chemicals react w/ the oxidized metal causing it to go pink or gray & very hard to remove.
No abrasives coarser than rags maybe an old plastic toothgbrush for tight places.
Remove the glass shade & hide it while you work on the lamp……..
Costly to replace.
First thing would be to give it a good scrubbing w/ hot soap & water
Dry it off & as mentioned , go to work w/ Brasso or auto polishing compound .
Pink compound to start & then white.
It will be messy & take time , but you will not ruin the value of the lamp.
Just clean it up & bring up some highlights without removing the patina.
The photo shows what it should look like.
After it’s cleaned up , another hot soap & water scrub.
Brasso & other polishes may have a little ammonia in them which can go a little green if left on the piece
Ok to use it , just get it all off.
A final rub w/ pastewax is OK.
Guessing about $5 to clean it up.
Best regards
