Danger of Rust in Drinking Water

There are many dangerous aspects to drinking water.  Rust is another component of water that is not something people want to think about or may be unaware of in their water.  Rust in water is a common problem for people that drink water from public sources.

Sometimes it is possible to use a home filtration system to get rid of the rust in water. If you have rust in your water your water will usually not be clear in color.  Water will look brown, red, orange, or yellow if it has rust in it.  The color of the water is based on the type of rust in the pipes that provide you with water.

Some rusty water is not hazardous to health but can damage clothing if washed in that water.  Keep in mind you probably will not want to drink water that looks funny in color even if it is not a hazard to your health.  It may be easy to determine if the rust is from your home or from the water treatment plant.  Even though it is stated to not be hazardous to your health it may be important to know if drinking too much of this funny looking water would make you sick or lead to health problems.

It is assumed if you do not drink too much of the rust colored water you would not run a risk of illness.  If you are not sure why your water is not clear call your water treatment center and ask what is in the water.  You can also have someone test the water to see if rust is in your water supply.
