Sediment Rust Filter

is my fuel filter bad?
i have a 1986 grand wagoneer and lately its been having a little trouble whenever i try to start it it runs for 3 to 4 seconds then it dies so i proceed to blow out the fuel filter after it is removed reinstall it then it works fine until i turn it off and leave it for 4 or 5 hours then the same problem occurs my thinking is the fuel tank has collected lots of sediment and rust over the years i was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas
my thinking is you should go down to auto parts store and buy a new fuel filter, air does not clean a fuel filter well, ALL CARS and trucks have build up in the fuel tank, if you use a good quality fuel you can minimize this a little however keeping the tank full is the best defense against this, and in modern fuel injected cars, its a good idea to keep the tank full, rather than empty (I fill my suburban up at half a tank, this keeps the fuel pump cooler, and less condensation gets in my gas tank. If you keep your tank mostly empty and only add 10 or 20 dollars at a time, there is a good chance you fuel pump is getting tired, and this could also cause the problem you mention. Put a new fuel filter in, and fill it up with chevron super unleaded and take if for a nice long drive. The techron in the chevron will help clean out any deposits that are gumming up your fuel system, If your vehicle runs better after one tank of super, you are headed in the right direction. good luck.
