How to remove old rust from white metal?

I am restoring an old cabinet, and it comes with accessories. I need guidance to remove rust from the jars’ tops, they are white metal, not sure if aluminium or zinc. I tried a very fine sandpaper but no results!

Thanks, what I meant by white was the metal tone:) There’s no paint, just rust. Lots of it, and old!

I would try a product called Evapo-Rust. It’s non-toxic, working through selective chelation. I haven’t tried any yet, but I’m planning to use it to restore all our rusty tools! You can read all about it and find what stores in your area carry it on the site. Good luck!
