rust off road
How can I get rust off a key?

My little brother found a key on thge road while we were walking and I want to make a necklace out of it but its rusty. How do i get the rust off of it?

As an engineer, I’ve used many things – but give Coke a try, If not – neat vinegar.
Coke contains phosphoric acid. This combines with the oxide, and will leave a black iron deposit – which will clean off with a scouring pad.
Leave in overnight, and wash/ scour a bit each day – should be done within a few days of this.

If your are a bit of an experimenter – you can use this method that uses a car battery, and a jar of Soda crystals with water.
Attach the key to the negative, and a shiny bolt to the positive by insulated wires. Hang the bolt in one side, and dip the key into the other side. Wear leather gloves in case you let the two wires touch – DON’T LET THEM TOUCH.
You will get a sudden fizzing at the key – and the rust will just flake off – leaving shiny metal underneath within 30 seconds or so.
Take out, wash, then spray with a clear laquer to stop it rusting again.
Don’t burn your hands on wires and batteries – this method could be dangerous if you let the wires touch, but all other products are harmless.
